Cape skirt pattern

Spanish version here.

Today I bring you the patterns of the cape skirt. It’s a very simple skirt to make! Both the pattern-making and the confection.

-Before beginning:

So that you have an idea, if you don’t know this skirt by its name, it’s a type of skirt which has a lot of fullness. =) Some examples:

There are 3 main types of cape skirt, depending on the more or less fullness they have:

1. Whole cape skirt (360º), with a greater fullness.

2. 3/4 cape skirt (270º), with a medium fullness.

3. 1/2 cape skirt (180º), with less fullness.

-Needed measurements: Waist perimeter and length of skirt.

-The pattern-making is really similar in the three types. Without further annoyances, I’m going to explain the steps to follow in each one of those skirts. The green color of the pictures refer to the fabric with the seams added =)

-Also, I am going to post two manners of doing the pattern-making, in case you want the skirt with less or more seams.

1.WHOLE CAPE SKIRT (360º)

capa 360 a

Construction:

-0-o’: Trace a straight line.

-A-1: Trace a semi-circumference. The radius will be= Waist perimeter/ 2·π

-A-2: Mark the length of the skirt and trace again a circumference.

  • Type 1 (without seams): The fabric is folded on itself where it says “Lomo”, forming two capes of fabric, therefore no lateral seams are needed. You can observe the little general view for understanding better the idea, once the fabric is opened.

There’s no lateral seam, so you don’t need to sew it.

  • Type 2 (with seams): Realize the pattern TWO times.

For confection, sew the two patterns facing each other.

2. 3/4 CAPE SKIRT (270º)

capa 270 a

Construction:

-0-o’ y 1-1′: Trace a straight line and a perpendicular one (I mean, do the typical cross xD).

-A-2: Trace a semi-circumference. The radius will be= Waist perimeter/π:2×3

-A-3: Length of the skirt, parting from A. Do the circumference.

-A-4: Find the middle point in between 1′ and 3. That will be the line that marks the 3/4 of the skirt.

  • Type 1 (one seam): The fabric is folded on itself where it says “Lomo”, forming two capes of fabric, therefore that seam is not needed. You can observe the little general view for understanding better the idea, once the fabric is opened.

For its confection, extend the fabric and sew the two seams together.

  • Type 2 (two seams): Realize the pattern TWO times.

For confection, sew the two patterns facing each other.

3. 1/2 CAPE SKIRT (180º)

capa 180 a

Construction:

-0-o’ y 1-1′: Trace a straight line and a perpendicular (In cross form).

-A-2: Trace the half of the semi-circumference. The radius will be= Waist perimeter/π

-A-3: Mark the length of the skirt from A and trace again the semi-circumference.
